Aluminum Oxynitride (ALON)

Scotty, remembering his time on Star Trek, discusses the possibility of transforming aluminum into a translucent material. There has been the discovery of a transparent aluminum-based ceramic called aluminum oxynitride, so the name isn't altogether off-base. However, this so-called transparent aluminum is neither a glass nor a metal. Composed of aluminum, oxygen, and nitrogen. Strong, durable, corrosion-resistant, oxidation- and radiation-resistant, and three times as hard as steel, aluminum oxynitride is also optically transparent, even more so than glass in infrared wavelengths.
