New Solid Materials to Turn Visible light into UV Light

A team at Kyushu University has engineered a solid-state organic material that converts visible sunlight into higher-energy ultraviolet light — a feat long considered impractical outside laboratory solutions. By attaching alkyl chains to sp³-hybridized carbon atoms, they created molecular "bumpers" that prevent destructive quenching while still allowing the triplet-triplet annihilation needed to merge two low-energy photons into one UV photon under natural solar intensity.
